If cities resembled mental landscapes, what shape would they have? Would they look like the kaleidoscopic architectures of Mattia Mognetti, who with photographic series "Istigkeit" invites us to cast a different gaze on constructed reality?

"Istigkeit" is the term used by Aldous Huxley in his essay The doors of perception to describe the state of alienation produced by mescalin. According to the author, this substance induces a contemplation which is incompatible with action, the will to act or the same thought of acting.

Mognetti’s photographic abstractions also suspend the gaze. As if in front of mysterious steles expelled from black backgrounds, we can’t understand the rational meaning of the images, but on a deeper level it’s like a part of us is looking in the mirror.

Series Istigkeit is composed of fragments of experiences, with photos of famous buildings in the city of Milan, shot by Mognetti. A photo-graphic experiment that juxtaposes different passions and interests, from psychology, (in which the author is specialized), to neurosciences, passing through architecture, with its volumes, geometries and perspectives interpreted in their symbolic valence.
