Those who wish to sojourn in an old castle can now do so without giving up any of today’s modern comforts thanks to an eco-friendly and 'underground' project by De Matos Ryan Architects: The Round Tower.

Part tower salvaged from the remains of a fire and part underground dungeon converted into a luminous modern villa, Round Tower is located in the English countryside of Gloucestershire, overlooking the town of Siddington.

The tower is 32 feet high and its vault has been restored while preserving the original walls and secular staircase.

Slightly sunken in front of the ancient building is a pool and sun terrace, from which the cement walls that guarantee the structure thermal insulation branch out.

Light and natural ventilation towards the subterranean rooms come from a circular opening in a section of the tower.

De Matos Ryan Architects are known for various renovations of historic architectures that mix ecological sustainability with contemporary design.

Just a few feet away from Round Tower in fact lies a farm house that was restored by this studio, with the same approach aimed at respecting the past while sustaining the future.
