The Rutger de Regt workout

In 2010 it was just an embryo of an idea, but then it took on some weight. Designer Rutger de Regt returns to Salone del Mobile 2012 with furniture series "Happy Misfits" and "Make & Mold".

Some of you may be familiar with his "muscled" chairs displayed 2 years ago as his graduate project in Ventura Lambrate in Milan during the exhibition of the Royal Academy of Art (The Hague).

This year, the Dutch designer is back in the Milanese design district with the finished project, in which he reveals the design process through a performance.

Behind a screen showing oiled-up bodybuilders as they flex, (the concept of the series), Rutger de Regt sculpts chairs like a master cheesemaker might prepare an elephantine mold of caciocavallo curd cheese.

The base of every piece is a soft balloon of styrofoam pearls which Rutger straps into belts and molds into the desired form. Then he sprays some vapor on the surface, increasing the density of the pearls and solidifying the shape. LTVs, Rutger De Regt, Lancia TrendVisions
In Milan, Rutger also presented prototypes "Make & Mold". The thermoplastic recycling process lands straight from the factory to his laboratory. The only necessary element is a new mold each time you heat the material. Not a bad message to be giving the industry.
