Veil and Reveal by Brit Van Nerven
With her graduate project "Veil and Reveal", presented at the DAE Graduation Show of Dutch Design Week 2012, Brit Van Nerven approached the fashion sector neither with an eye for mass market research nor for re-elaborations of the latest trends found on glossy magazines.
The fashion designer took to the street with a few questions in mind: "What do you want to reveal and what do you want to hide with the way you dress?". Brit herself interviewed Dutch women of different culture, ethnicity and religion. And she discovered two things: covering the body follows evident rules as well as unwritten, hidden and personal ones.
Each woman in fact follows a set of individual rules that mixes social and intimate norms, but also the desire to express more or less conscious messages. All through clothes: by veiling or revealing parts of the body.
Brit tried to interpret these human and personal reflections by transforming them into her own language. The result is a customizable all-black collection, constituted of an array of modular pieces that can be mixed based on one’s culture and personality.
And in the near future, the designer tells us, her idea is to design a a tailored chair in leather, straps and metal. Using a special measurement system to make the sizes of the starting forms for the tailored leather seats.
