Youngwon Kim's graduate collection: customization is just a footstep away

From bicycles to shoes, the step can be a short one. Especially if the two worlds share a mechanism through which they can be personalized. Youngwon Kim’s 2013 graduate collection stems from a lab class in which the designer learnt how to customize bicycles by applying a fixed gear mechanism.

But footwear also has elements that can be customized. Kim identifies them first and foremost in the heel, a simple, functional and conspicuous part of the shoe. Secondly in the leather layering technique, that allows her to investigate new visual forms. Finally, in the use of materials and color. The models that result are far removed from any industrial production, and are rather conceived to explore new paths that apply the trends of the moment while also considering functional aspects.
